A diagram how excess fat builds around the stomach and intestines
We know all of you greatly abhor fat. A fat abdomen places you at risk for certain diseases and limits your daily activities. But do you know how fat accumulates in the intestines?
This article aims to describe how food is being absorbed in our system and how this results to fat build-up around the stomach and intestines.
Food goes in our mouth and is being chewed by our teeth into very little pieces as it gets mixed with saliva. Saliva moistens the food and transforms it into a bolus and the food gets mixed with amylase, an enzyme which digests carbohydrates.
The food then goes into the esophagus and goes into our stomach, where it is now being acted upon by hydrochloric acid, making it easier to be acted upon by enzymes from the intestines. It then goes into the small intestines and is broken down further by enzymes. Our intestines contain small finger-like projections in its linings which absorb the final breakdown products of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.
At this point, carbohydrates are already present in the bloodstream as glucose. Glucose then is being utilized by the organs of the body by an energy-creating cycle known as the Krebs’s cycle. Note that all of this glucose is not being utilized by the body. Those which are not utilized by the body are converted into glycogen, a storage form of glucose, which is later converted to fat. This is responsible for the fat deposits located on our bellies.
Proteins are converted into amino acids, the building blocks being utilized by the body to build and repair body tissues. Usually the body utilizes protein and a small amount of it is also transformed into glucose than into glycogen later on.
Fats are remarkable in that when they are present in the blood, they are easily burned into energy, but when taken in excess is also stored into adipose tissue, which is located on our bellies also.
